ENVIRONMENT PRESERVATION

PROJECTS

We acknowledge that as the population grows around the Lake Bunyonyi, the environment is more and more degraded. The current landscape differs a lot from what our grandparents knew and told us about as we were kids. We see that the native forest forest is disappearing, that some animals such as the leopards are not living here anymore, that the indigenous nature has been replaced by fields and/or eucalyptus plantations, that more and more trash lays in the nature... We fear that this might increase erosion, reduce soil fertility on the long run, degrade the quality of our water, reduce water resources availability for indigenous species and agriculture...

We believe that the people are not doing it on purpose: they do it because they need to eat, earn a living and lack proper environmental education to really understand the consequences of the changes that are being made to our beautiful lake of many little birds (more than 300 species!).

We truly hope that our projects will help our communities to develop in a sustainable way, rehabilitate the biodiversity of our region and create new opportunities for the people.

Natural toilets

Sanitation is an issue. Traditionally, we use latrines. We want to evolve towards accessible sanitation solutions that allow us to preserve the environment; ideally improve our environment! In the future, we are thinking about installing dry toilets (why not Urine-Diverting Dry Toilets (UDDT)?) and use plants to sanitize our waste waters.

Vegetables garden

More than 90% of the people around the Lake are peasants. Even though we live in a very fertile region, many still suffer from food scarcity. We have our own vegetable gardens to achieve a more autonomous, sustainable and healthy way of living. We farm in accordance with our ecological mindset (no chemicals, crop rotation, essence associations, no mechanical tools, …). We look for support and ideas to improve our techniques, enhance abundance and lower effort.

Tree Planting

We see eucalyptus and loss of fauna biodiversity as a danger for our region. We work with local communities to rehabilitate degraded areas with local species. We inspire from native forests in the area to know what species naturally grow here. We consider the different horizons of our forests to make sure we rehabilitate our forests properly, in accordance with the abundance of native forests, from soil to canopy.

Plastic disposal

We are not happy when we see litter in our beautiful Nature! We collect plastic on our compound. We provide training to understand the consequences from pollution and the benefits from reducing, reusing and recycling.

Fish ponds

Our family used to raise fishes. We have two pounds on our compound. We are currently rehabilitating them to sustain local fish production. We want to integrate this development in an integrated farming system.

Botanical FOREST

The forest around us is full of healthy plants… We fear that the knowledge of our grandparents might disappear. We must save this heritage! The Botanical Forest aims at preserving local plants to educate people about the great benefits from our local fauna! Visitors will experience the great tastes and healthy bonuses from the weeds, flowers, leaves, etc that surround us. We want to create an abundant forest with indigenous plants and guided tours for people to acknowledge what our grandparents knew and keep this knowledge alive for the generations to come.
